What Makes a Deviation Popular?

Fri Oct 17, 2008, 7:36 PM
I have a very specific reason for asking this which I will get to in a moment. First off though, I have been pondering this question since I've been on DA and I have come up with a few ideas. Of course just plain artistic brilliance is always appreciated, but that is certainly not the only measure of the popularity of a deviation on DA. So moving on I also find popular deviations often share these characteristics (unless they are just plain artistically awesome):

Fanart is of course the biggie...whether that is a good thing or a bad thing probably depends on whether you yourself like and draw fanart. ;) Though the idea that fanart will automatically make you super popular on DA is a wrong one. I'm not all that popular and I have some fanart-making friends that aren't either. I have also found humor to be very popular on DA. My most favorited piece is a cartoon and I notice that many popular deviants make cartoons and comics their main focus on DA as well. When it comes to original characters and works...I find it can be a toss up. Of course some original comics and strips on DA are some of the most popular things around. Some OCs are as beloved as any professional anime or cartoon character and have their own fanart drawn of them. But then I have also come across some people making their own comics and mangas that for whatever reason have yet to catch people's attention.

When I look at my own deviations, I sometimes wonder how one got really popular (and popular for me is like over thirty favs XD). In fact a couple of my deviations that I dislike the most are paradoxically some of my more popular. Likewise out of my three or four most favorite things I have ever drawn, only one is popular.

What brought all of this up was my most recent drawing. I personally think it is one of the best I have ever done and was really proud of it. Yet no one else seems to agree. And I can't figure out whether that is because I am wrong and it isn't that good, or if it is because it is of another show besides Bleach, or maybe people are turned off by the subject matter...hell it beats me. XD

So I thought I would ask all of you. What makes you fav a deviation instead of merely looking at it, or commenting? Do you only fav things from a certain fandom...or are you one of those types that will fav anything and everything that catches your eye (like me)? Does something have to be technically brilliant, funny, or just touch you in some way for you to fav it? Is there anything you will fave deviations of no matter whether or not it is all that good (I'm that way with Ulquihime...I'll fav just about any deviation if it is Ulquihime XD)?

And lastly, to any one that is my friend on here, or knows me fairly well...well it's no secret that I want to be popular on DA (not in pageviews, but in how many favs my stuff gets), so do any of you have any suggestions for me to get those favs? Getting better artistically is of course a given, and I think I have gotten better since I have joined DA but I haven't gotten any more popular so there must be more to it than just that. What would you personally like to see me do more of?

P.S. Yes I am working on "Obsession". Expect to see some pictures and descriptions of the main characters soon. XD XD XD

I don't quite understand it either, Sid. From what I've seen recently, you've improved a LOT from when I first 'met' you, so I'm at a loss.

I think a part of it may have to do with the fact that you're doing more original stuff and less fanart for really popular shows (like Bleach). Heck, even if you do fanart for the more obscure shows, you probably won't get that much attention here. Also, original art kinda gets the shaft here unless you are RIDICULOUSLY good at drawing.

As for being popular...*thinks about it for a moment* I'm not really sure. Sure, if you continued with fanart you'd probably get more attention than if you do original stuff, but would that make you happy only doing fanart and not anything of your own? I think, more than anything else, you should worry about if what you're drawing makes YOU happy. Everyone else comes second. If you're proud of the work you're doing and the strides you've overcome with your artwork, that's the most important thing of all.

I can't blame you for wanting to be popular here on dA though. I think that's many deviant's dreams for this site, to be the next big dA artist. Don't give up hope!

Well that's just it...this may sound weird, but in a way I want to draw what makes other people happy. Drawing stuff that people don't like makes me sad actually. Of course I'd love it if what I wanted to draw was the same stuff that people wanted to see, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I mean I am still going to to draw what I want to, but I am trying to see if I am missing something here on how to get people's attention. I want to get people's attention...I want people to love my stuff. I mean I know I am not like a technically brilliant artist, but I don't think that is all there is to being popular. I see people all the time that are at the same level I am artistically, but are loads more popular. I just want to know what I can do so that the majority of people that come across my stuff will be moved to watch me or fav things. That will probably never happen though. I'm lacking something and I don't know if I'll ever find out what it is.

There are several factors that make a deviation popular. Two which are most important, style and presentation. Digital art - with most professionalism is probably the utmost respected form of art I think.

As you said; fan art is very popular, and originality not so much. However to get into the core of respect of other artist, you'd have to find commonalities with them and understand that not only do you embrace art, but you live it as well.

If you want to be recognized in this community, you have to stand out of the crowd - and make a mark - be proud of your accomplishments!..

Well I do try to stand out...I don't think most of my deviations look like any others you would find in the fandoms I am most active in. As for digital art...well I LIKE coloring with markers and I don't think I am going to change that. Maybe that means I will be forever doomed to obscurity? As for standing out more...I really don't know how. Any suggestions?

That's something you'd figure out on your own. But your art is rather good - don't worry about popularity, all you really need is a humble few & pride within yourself...

no clue, i'm betting things that are cute are the most popular things around...
this took me 5 minutes and it has ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FAVES [link] AND 1313 VIEWS

how it got that popular, i will never know. it even says doodle in the title. and things i work for hours on get like 3 views, ahaha, oh. i do not get da.

I'm always trying to appreciate what I have, trust me. Yet I have never understood how people can be happy with their art and a handful of friends as watchers. I hate most of my art and want to be popular on DA, but I AM trying to learn. XD Thank you for talking to me! XD

:iconsidonzo:
I totally don't get DA either. Though that doodle you linked too IS really cute. XD

Well I think some of my stuff is cute, but apparently not cute enough...nor funny enough, nor good enough.

But yeah, I totally get what you are saying about something that takes you ten minutes getting way more favs than something that takes you days. So there is some formula to popular deviations, and effort doesn't always seem to factor into it...though obviously it sometimes does. *is still trying to figure this out* ;)

Actually, I don't have the time to just browse dA all that often, so I mostly just fav my friends' works. What makes me fav one of those is when I see they've put a lot of effort into it, or if it's very funny, or just looks plain awesome. Also, the better I know you, the higher is the possibility I'll fav your work (this is not saying that I fav every single piece by my close friends though XD)

As for getting more popular... Just be nice! ^^ Take the time to comment on other people's stuff and make friends! I think I could be considered fairly popular, but truth is I hardly ever get comments or favs from strangers, it's the same people over and over again. My friends. XD

Blessed are we who can laugh at ourselves, for we will never cease to be amused.
:iconsidonzo:
I too more often fav the deviations of my friends and the people I watch just because that is the most convenient, especially if it is one of those times I am not on DA much. When I am on more, I do take the time to browse about and fav stuff and find new people to watch and things. I like to browse the newest section and the thumbshare section so I can find little known artists instead of the same super popular ones every time. That was how I found you, remember? When I first found you, you were new and relatively unknown. XD

Anyway, I probably could comment more (since I frequently take hiatuses from DA), but for me...I'm not sure that exactly translates into more watchers. In fact of the people I fav and comment on the most...almost none of them watch me or even look at my stuff. Of course I am not nice to people and comment on them just to get them to watch me. I actually don't mind if they don't. I just wish I could attract watchers and favs from people that like my stuff just because they do...not because they are my good friend and feel obligated too. XD
